MAY

Wednesday 1st to Sunday 19th May

National Trust HERITAGE FESTIVAL (continues)

“This year’s festival brings together an array of events across the nation from

18 April – 19 May 2019. The theme this year is ‘Connecting People, Places and the Past.’

The Australian Heritage Festival brings to life all chapters of Australian culture and history, telling the stories of diverse and distinctive experiences that make up our communities.”

For further information of events during the festival, collect a Festival Programme from Old Schoolmaster’s House.

On Sunday 12th May, 11.30 am – 2.30 pm, you can attend ‘Back to Old Blythewood Day’

Old Blythewood, situated on South West Highway a short distance south of Pinjarra, stands as a testament to the industry, ingenuity and flexibility of the pioneering McLarty family who were amongst the first Europeans to settle in the Murray District.  Join us for a picnic (BYO food, drink and chair or rug) as we celebrate Old Blythewood and 180 years since the McLarty's arrived in Western Australia. Learn about the history of this significant place and the importance to the community. Bring your picnic, family and friends and enjoy the beautiful heritage garden, live entertainment and activities for all.

The Old Schoolmaster’s House, Edenvale, Pinjarra, is a wonderful place to browse photographs of the past, family histories and historic facts about the early days of the Murray District.

New photographic displays will be launched on Friday 17th May depicting the ‘lost’ timber mills in the vicinity of Dwellingup (Holyoake, Banksiadale, Marrinup, Plavins).  Restored heritage buildings of Pinjarra will also feature in the new displays: St John’s Church, the Exchange Hotel and the Courthouse.   Visit us to view these displays and to learn much more about the 185 year history of the District.

We are excited that the newly renovated St John’s Church will be formally opened to the community at the end of May.  The Church building was deconsecrated in January and ownership passed from the Bunbury Diocese of the Anglican Church to the Shire of Murray. Thanks to the generosity of pioneer families, individuals and community groups, sufficient money was raised to re-roof the building and restore its interior.  St John’s, built in 1860, will remain an asset to the community and the Murray District as a whole.
