PRESIDENTS REPORT 2017

by Brenda Beacham

The Society once again has had an eventful year, increasing in strength and commitment.

The photographic exhibitions continue with the latest being “Origin and Evolution of the Heritage buildings of Pinjarra.

We continue with our programme of speakers with John Jackson giving us a heartfelt presentation of the Yarloop fire. The boat trip to the Murray River Delta Islands was very informative. The numbers were limited to the size of the boat needed to visit the islands.

The Society members were well represented at the Royal WA Historical Society Conference which was held at Armadale. The End of year event was once again held at Blythewood. This event affords the opportunity to catch up with those who are interested in the local history. The weather was kind to us as well. In February Ross Walmsley hosted members to a tour of his private museum. This was greatly appreciated and he is to be congratulated on an excellent collection.

The Schoolmaster’s House was open to the Public during the Pinjarra Festival and a continuous flow of visitors were welcomed.

Recently members enjoyed a visit to the Armadale Museum. Ideas and projects can be born from these visits. Also visited in Armadale the historic church that was completely reconstructed and the school house that was moved from another location. The largest brick building to be relocated in the southern hemisphere. This brings to mind the need for restoration of the Anglican Church in Pinjarra.

As always the volunteers of the society are greatly appreciated. The volunteers in the local studies area continue to build and maintain the collection. It is an excellent resource for those who wish to research local history.  The photograph displays take many hours of volunteer’s time to search for the correct photograph and make sure the correct information is presented. The MDHS website is up and running. The members who volunteer to be on the roster for when the Schoolmaster’s is open, a big thank you.

The supper you enjoy at the General meeting and the AGM is all donated by committee members and former committee members.
